Guide Rod Works in a Compact

Posted by Bruce Smithhammer on Jun 12th 2023

I was curious, based on the website description, how this guide rod assembly could work for both a full size and a compact model, given the different barrel lengths. I ordered the assembly and attempted to install it in my PDP Compact Pro. The guide rod is the proper length for the Compact, but the spring I received is definitely for the full size model - there was no way I could get it to fit in the Compact (yes, I watched the video, and I've installed lots of aftermarket, uncaptured springs in a variety of pistols). I ended up ordering G19 recoil springs from Wolff. Knowing what I know now, I would have just ordered the guide rod and washer without a spring - figured I'd pass this along for anyone attempting to do the same (and it would be good if the website description included this info). Otherwise, everything appears to be well made.

Great quality machining, looks great -I feel more confident have steel in place of polymer- took three attempts to install and it fits just fine-no friction drag at all- FAST SHIPPING!

The ZR Tactical Steel guide rod was exactly what I was looking for to upgrade from the PDP's polymer rod. The fluting and machining quality are excellent. I paired this with the 13lb IMSI Flat Spring and other than the pain in the butt to get the spring, washer, and rod lined up in the slide it mated perfectly with my PDP Full-Size 4" If I could have one wish it would be to have a captured spring/washer assembly option. Thanks ZR Tactical!

This guiderod is in both of our Walther SF's the 5 and the 4. Paired with a Wilson 5" 13# 1911 spring they both run my 130PF 147DG FP loads perfectly.

I had the DPM recoil system in my SF Walther and swapped it out for the ZR stainless guide rod and 13# Wilson Combat flat spring and the gun is shooting much flatter. Great combination for the SF.

A well machined, solid, and surprisingly weighty guide rod. Ordered, shipped, and arrived quickly. In my 9mm PPQ Q4, I paired it with a Wolff 18lb Glock spring but I think I am going to have to drop that a bit. 18lbs works well for full power loads and those approaching +P but seems a bit too stout for IPSC/IDPA loads. The guide rod itself has worked well so far and is a really robust piece of metal. Please note that I have yet to really give it a good workout but my first impression is positive. There does seems to be a bit more play between the outside diameter of the rod and inside tunnel of the guide rod chamber and I will be keeping an eye on wear as a result. Length is good. I may try to see if I can get an O-ring or washer to neatly fit in end of the guide rod chamber to both act as a buffer for the end of the recoil spring and keep the guide rod itself a bit more centered so it doesn't rub against the frame. However, this is more of an asthetic pet peeve and doesn't seem to be an issue affecting performance thus far but, again, very few rounds down range. As a bonus, I optimistically bought a 2nd one for a CANIK TP9SF EC and I think it is going to work in that as well - thank goodness for the shared P99 heritage.
